Are you bored with the same old vacation ideas and places to goto every year? Do the kids always want to go somewhere new andexciting for their vacation? Of course they do! Are maybe youand your wife just want to get away to a romantinc interlude fora few days - then try something really unique. Instead of planning the same old boring vacation this year makeit an adventure. Why not go to the seashore and stay in alighthouse? Or, better yet, become a lighthouse keeper for aweek! Now that's a vacation the whole family will talk about foryears to come. Did you know that you can stay in a lighthouse on the GreatLakes, the Eastern coast or on the Pacific coast? There are evenlighthouses in Canada and England you can stay in. If you likecastles - you'll love the lighthouse in England that is built ontop of a castle on the bluffs in Wales.
Depending on the lighthouse location you could even register tobecome a "lighthouse keeper" for a week. At the very least youcan stay in a beautifully restored keepers cottage just like theoriginal lighthouse keepers did - with one exception. Today theyhave all the modern comforts including TV and HBO! If this sounds interesting you can check out a complete listing, with descrptions, of currently available sites atwww.the-best-light-houses.com/lighthouse_lodging.html. Includedin the descriptions are the contact information, directions, pictures and a link to each lighthouse website. In most cases these vacations can actually cost you less than a"normal" vacation. A big bonus is you also get to learn a lotabout US history. If it had not been for the 100's oflighthouses that dotted our coastlines, in centuries past, theUnited States could not have grown to what we are today. As a young nation the US depended heavily on trade and thecoastlines were dangerous to navigate. The US Lighthouse Servicewas enacted by Congress to build and maintain a system oflighthouses as aids to navagation. Over the last 200+ yearsthese lighthouses have saved countless tens of thousands oflives. Even today they still guide small ships safely back toport every single day. People have always been fascinated by these tall and lonelystructures. Kids love to learn and tell their friends about thegreat adventures they had. (Side Note: It's called braggingrights!) So while you have some fun your learning about ourhistory and teaching your kids about these great United States. Not to mention the fantastic photos you can take with tha newdigital camera. Photographs of lighthouses are some of the mostsought after on the Internet. If you don't believe me do asearch on "lighthouse" and see how many people are searching forthat every month!
